Platform: Windows (All Versions)

Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

There is much talk regarding the lifetime of Solid State Drives (SSD) and Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and while there are good arguments that an SSD has limited reads and writes, due to degradation, both life cycles seem to be more or less the same. However, if you want to make sure your SSD will last for as long as possible, you can use SSD Fresh to make your operating system treat it with greater care. The application is capable of disabling various features, which wouldn't present any problems to HDDs, but can have an impact on an SSD.

SSD Fresh comes in free and paid versions and it can be used on all popular Windows versions. Its setup package is small and its components can be installed in under a minute, without making any complicated settings. You can launch the application right away, without worrying about any special hardware or software requirements.

The application provides you with general information about your hard drives, as well as options for manual or automatic optimization. A percentage of the used disk space is displayed on the interface's overview tab, but you can also find a dial that indicates the current optimization level of your OS, which is updated automatically when you perform certain tasks.

Optimizing the system manually doesn't involve anything more than clicking a series of on/off switches, located on the same interface, on the Optimization tab. To make your SSD last longer, you can disable the system's indexing function, enable an improved defragmentation method, disable event logging and more. Alternatively, you can just hit a button for auto-optimization and the application will take care of everything for you. Though there aren't too many options to remember, you can back up your current settings, if you wish to revert to them at a later date.

SSD Fresh comes with a live analysis feature as well, which tracks the most active processes on your system. This way, you can figure out which applications are wearing down your SSD the most. The information includes process names, as well as the total and average amount of written data, and it is displayed in real time in a table.

There is not much you have to do with SSD Fresh and it shouldn't take more than a minute to optimize the system, which is a fair trade, considering that you can make your SSD last a bit longer.

If you care about your SSD and you want it to live for as long as possible, SSD Fresh can help you achieve that goal.

Pros

The application can prevent Windows from performing operations that can be taxing on an SSD. It lets you optimize the system manually, but it can also optimize it for you. It works fast and it is quite easy to use.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention.
